Niki Jedlicka the ups and downs of High Stakes Poker
Uncategorized March 3rd, 2008Niki Jedlicka had a huge high stakes poker year for most of 2007. On his Kaibuxxe alias, he started 2007 with a bang. Later in the year Jedlicka signed a deal with full tilt poker, changing his alias to Niki Jedlicka, and hit a huge downswing. Jedlicka ended the year losing over one and a half million on his namesake account, and everyone got to hear about it on his blog. Jedlicka plays an incredibly fearless, reckless style that make these types of swings a reality, not to mention his game selection and bankroll management seem to leave something to be desired. 2008 has been treating him a little bit better, though he is still playing classic Jedlicka poker. His 5th place finish at the Aussie Millions even cleared him over $75k. Online, Niki seems to continue his roller coaster. He has had several sessions with 75k+ winnings, however he has suffered even more sessions losing 60k+.

It is blatantly clear that Jedlicka has exactly what it takes to be a consistent top level online player, however it is also clear that he has leaks in his game, and they are not technical ones. If Jedlicka could avoid steaming and make proper game selection, he can certainly be a long time force. One thing that separate good players from great is being able to handle the variance of high stakes poker. In Jedlicka’s case, it seems to be a matter of not looking at the big picture, and not knowing when to call it quits when losing, though from watching him recently it seems to be getting better, and not continually donating when he is running bad. It will be interesting to see what the remainder of 2008 brings for Jedlicka.

It’s interesting that you bring up not knowing when to leave when you’re losing. I was just reading on another blog where Phil Ivey was getting beat hand after hand and he decided to just pull the plug on that session and call it quits.
When Phil Ivey is winning he’ll clean you out of all your money and when he hits a little slump, he’ll cut his losses, leave and re-group.
With this type of strategy, he’ll always win more than he loses because he knows when the cards aren’t treating him right.
The famous Kenny Rogers “Gambler” song goes “Know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em…”
and the most important part of the song…
“Know when to walk away…Know when to run.”
Phil Ivey knows when to walk away…Niki needs to know when to run.
